Saraki appeared before the tribunal on Tuesday, September 22, where 13-count charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty to all the counts.
According to National Mirror, the ruling party is considering former minority leader in the 7th Senate and former governor of Benue state, senator George Akume and the wife to the national leader of the party, senator Remi Tinubu as likely replacement for Saraki. Also being considered are two ranking senators from the South-West zone.
Findings showed that, Saraki might be asked to resign his position on moral grounds in order to have ample time to concentrate on his trial. It is also gathered by the National Mirror that if Saraki refused to obliged, he might be impeached.
A northern group opposed to Saraki, northern ethnic nationalities unity congress has advised the Senate president to turn in his resignation following his arraignment.
Recall that the ruling party picked Ahmed Lawan as its preferred candidate and was upset when Saraki emerged unopposed while his colleagues were said to be waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari at the international conference centre for a meeting.
Speaking shortly after his first appearance before the tribunal, Saraki said he was at the tribunal to defend his fundamental human rights and also to demonstrate his belief in the rule of law and respect for the judiciary.
